Scientology Brochure Highlights Programs that Reduce Drug Abuse

Scientology Brochure Highlights Programs that Reduce Drug Abuse

Italian Scientologists of the “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” initiative have logged half a million hours on syringe pick-up events in public parks and other heavy heroin-use areas.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 14, 2012

The message of the first brochure in the Scientology: How We Help series—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World —is simple: Drug education and prevention work. Those who are seeking to address the drug problem through “harm reduction” claim the only way to “solve” drugs is to make them available in a “less lethal” form. But even the most strident harm reduction proponent cannot deny how drug demand reduction—drug education and prevention—has transformed the drug scene in Italy.

When a 2005 analysis of Italy’s Po River showed that the waterway, which runs through the main industrial area of Italy, carried the equivalent of 4 kilos, (8.8 pounds), of cocaine per day, the government launched a nationwide awareness campaign targeting young people.

Church of Scientology drug prevention programs were already at work in the country but were stepped up to meet the renewed urgency to cut drug usage.

With heroin use high in the 1980s and 90s, the Church had launched its first initiative, “Say No to Drugs.” As part of the program, Scientologists organized syringe pick-up events in public parks and other heavy heroin-use areas—an activity that continues today. In total, they have logged half a million hours removing massive quantities of dangerous needles.

Concurrently, volunteers began conducting lectures in schools, holding drug awareness events and speaking on television and radio to bring the drug-free message to a broad audience.

To increase the grass-roots impact of the program, Say No to Drugs teams increased their distribution of Truth About Drugs booklets through partnerships with sports organizations. Volunteers also distributed the educational materials in nightclubs, passing out booklets and playing the documentary on closed-circuit television.

A dozen towns officially adopted the campaign, and the drug education booklets were printed in full in a national police magazine.

In one year, Italian volunteers reached 500,000 people through 300 events, handing out 250,000 booklets, with airings of public service announcements and The Truth About Drugs documentary to some 16 million viewers.

Writing to the Church of Scientology volunteers, Italian Senator Salvo Fleres acknowledged the role these volunteers played in contributing to a 25 percent decrease in drug abuse in the country through the Say No to Drugs campaign which he described as “one of the most enduring and largest drug prevention initiatives in Italy.”

The results were so dramatic, the director of the Department for Anti-Drug Policies of the Italian government said: “The alarms of the past years, particularly on cocaine, made us think that it was inevitable living with drugs. But the work of prevention activities, with all the rest, yielded benefits. And now we can say that drugs aren’t an invincible plague.”

About The Church of Scientology

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”

The Church of Scientology supports Truth About Drugs, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns. It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.

Revolution in Education, Creativity and Power Management, a Concise Program of Emotional Education

Revolution in Education, Creativity and Power Management, a Concise Program of Emotional Education

My Metaphors, Myself; illustrating the use of creativity for self discovery

Manchester, VT (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

New Announcement:

Training for Clinical Professionals November 17 – 18 2012

CPM delivers mental health services efficiently and cost-effectively with the core concept of power management. The premise is that the unconscious mind seeks to resolve conflict. We recognize four alternative ways of resolving, the relational modalities as wellness diagnoses. Pathology begins as power mismanagement. Health is restored as a person identifies his relational modality and learns how to manage power optimally.

Two key advantages over other programs:

CPM has a solid conceptual foundation on the nature of the unconscious as a circumscribed measurable conflict resolving entity and its technological application, using creativity for self-discovery, generating a very meaningful self-assessment that is educational, diagnostic and therapeutic.

The conceptual model is based on understanding of the unconscious advanced in Conflict Analysis, the Formal Theory of Behavior, 1988, and the technological is founded on a manual driven psychotherapy, based on the Conflict Analysis Battery, a self assessment, also published in 1988.

The battery is the key to a user-friendly comprehensive emotional education program that leads to demonstrable improvement of therapy outcome, while diminishing the reliance on medicinal treatments and costly professional services.

Creativity and Power Management combines the assessment with a cognitive educational segment presented in ‘Science Stealing the Fire of the Gods and Healing the World,’ 2011.

Educational versus therapeutic focus

This program has two alternative delivery modes:

one is as a concise and comprehensive wellness psycho-educational program emphasizing the cognitive segment and the other, a diagnostic and therapeutic program for psychiatric evaluation and therapy settings emphasizing the experiential assessment tool segment.

The purely educational program can be delivered as wellness emotional education in the classroom and for the general public.
The purely assessment program can serve as intake evaluation, as inpatient and out patient therapy, to organize information within self-help communities, and for staff training programs. The options may be useful in hospitals, prisons, clinics, and the evaluation of people at medical clinics as well as within the social justice system.

New Online Continuing Education Course on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia from HealthForumOnline

New Online Continuing Education Course on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia from HealthForumOnline

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 16, 2012

HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) provider of online continuing education (CE) is pleased to announce a new course entitled, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) its extensive online CE resource library for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals.

The National Center on Sleep Disorders Research describes insomnia as difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep for at least 3 nights per week.(1) However the diagnosis is more commonly based on subjective complaints in quality and quantity of sleep associated with marked distress or significant daytime impairment. (2) In the U.S. alone, insomnia is the second most common chronic health problem, led only by chronic pain, as well as the second most common psychological health problem. (3) The National Health Foundation reports that insomnia affects approximately 33% of the U.S. population, with 9% reporting insomnia on a regular nightly basis and 24% reporting occasional insomnia (e.g., 1)

Insomnia impacts far more than sleep. Well documented consequences including functional impairment, work absenteeism and disability, impaired concentration and memory, increased medical services utilization, increased risk of motor vehicle and work accidents, and heightened risk of developing depression and/or an anxiety disorder. (e.g., 4, 5) Increased use of prescription medications, over-the-counter products and alcohol have also been associated with insomnia. (e.g., 6)

Yet, despite being a major health problem for many people and a burden on our healthcare system, insomnia remains inadequately treated. (7) Pharmacotherapy, including the use of hypnotics and antidepressants, is the most common treatment for insomnia, however, concerns about side effects, tolerance, and long term use have led to an increased interest in the use of non-pharmacological interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. (8)

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is a safe and effective nonpharmacological alternative. As a multimodal approach, CBT-I targets the behavioral and psychological factors that initiate and maintain insomnia. Moreover, CBT-I has been shown to be effective in treating insomnia in several different populations and with various comorbid medical and psychiatric illnesses. (8)

This new online course from HealthForumOnline describes the cognitive and behavioral techniques used in CBT-I, as well as reviews the current literature on its efficacy and clinical applications. Specifically, health professionals will be able to: 1) define insomnia and recognize several associated biopsychosocial consequences; 2) discuss CBT-I from a theory- and evidence-based perspective and its proven utility as a non-pharmacologic treatment of insomnia; 3) identify the behavioral and cognitive components of CBT-I; and 4) address clinical considerations and incorporate common CBT strategies in the treatment of patients with primary, as well as secondary, insomnia.

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can chose from HFO’s 19 categories of continuing education (CE) topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine containing over 80 online CE courses that are fast, convenient and cost-effective. For more information on this course or a complete listing of titles in our online CE resource library, visit HealthForumOnline.com.

About HealthForumOnline:

HealthForumOnline (HFO) is approved as a provider of CE courses by the American Psychological Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors, the Association of Social Work Boards, and several state professional organizations, including the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Health Care Receivables Leader General Service Bureau Inc./Early Out Services Inc. Chairman Bob Leavitt Named Chairman of Make-A-Wish Nebraska

Health Care Receivables Leader General Service Bureau Inc./Early Out Services Inc. Chairman Bob Leavitt Named Chairman of Make-A-Wish Nebraska

Make-A-Wish Nebraska grants more than 100 wishes to children each year.

Omaha, NE (PRWEB) September 25, 2012

Bob Leavitt, chairman of health care receivables leader General Service Bureau Inc./Early Out Services Inc., was recently named chair of the governing board for Make-A-Wish Nebraska.

“Our companies have been involved with Make-A-Wish for nearly two decades,” says Leavitt, who has served on the Nebraska chapter’s board for the past four years. “It’s something where, once you become involved, once you see the incredible impact Make-A-Wish has not only on the kids, but also their families … it really becomes addictive. What we do is very important, very valuable and very meaningful.”

Leavitt, whose one-year term began earlier this month, will oversee Make-A-Wish Nebraska’s 30th Anniversary year. The chapter, which was founded in 1983, grants more than 110 wishes each year to children across the state.

“We’re a leading chapter in the country,” says Brigette Young, the Make-A-Wish Nebraska President. “We want the entire state to know about what our amazing donors, staff and volunteers have been doing for kids with life-threatening health conditions over the past 30 years, and to invite everyone to be a part of where we’re headed during the next 30.”

Leavitt says the chapter wants to recruit 30 new “Adopt a Wish” partners along with getting more than 3 million frequent flier airline miles donated during the next 12 months. Make-A-Wish’s single biggest expense is purchasing airline tickets to fly children and their families to Wish destinations like Walt Disney World, Hawaii and elsewhere.

“I’m proud of the fact that we’ve never had to turn down or delay a Nebraska child’s Wish request due to a lack of funding,” Leavitt says. “But the unfortunate reality is that we’re granting a record number of Wishes each year, and we continually need to raise more and more funds to help pay for them.”

The average Wish for a child costs approximately $ 7,500, according to Young. She says the Nebraska Chapter granted nearly 115 wishes during 2011, and that the number continues to rise each year.

“This is a big year for us, filled with significant goals and challenges,” Young says. “And I can’t think of a better person to lead us through it than Bob Leavitt. He and General Service Bureau Inc./Early Out Services Inc. have been supporting Make-A-Wish Nebraska kids for nearly two decades. It’s so inspiring to see the amount of passion, emotion and energy that Bob brings to our board. His enthusiasm and dedication is contagious.”

Leavitt says that growing up in the family-owned, health care receivables companies General Service Bureau Inc./Early Out Services Inc. – started in 1946 and purchased by his father in 1974 – has taught him the value of giving back to the community.

“Our health care receivables companies were founded on finding ways to improve and enrich the lives of the people we came into contact with every day,” he says. “That’s why we’ve won three Better Business Bureau Integrity Awards and received so many industry accolades. It’s about treating people the right way. And being a part of amazing organizations like Make-A-Wish helps fuel that mentality while reminding us what a difference we can make in the lives of the kids in our communities.”

ABOUT GENERAL SERVICE BUREAU INC./EARLY OUT SERVICES INC.

Early Out Services, Inc. (EOS) and General Service Bureau, Inc. (GSB) are two separate companies that operate under the same mission of “Enhancing the Financial Well-Being of Others.” EOS and GSB collectively comprise a family-owned and operated business. Since 1946, the Omaha, Nebraska-based group has been a leader in health care debt collection and receivables management services for health care organizations nationwide. EOS delivers first-party, self-pay management and insurance follow-up/resolution programs to the health care industry, operating as an extension of the business office, while GSB provides third party, bad debt recovery services to the health care industry.

Dr. Teresa Fuller Leads the Way to Permanent Weight Loss with New Book

Dr. Teresa Fuller Leads the Way to Permanent Weight Loss with New Book

BALTIMORE, MD. (PRWEB) September 15, 2012

Rigorous dieting. Militaristic workout techniques. Miracle slimming products. Nowadays, the methods of losing weight seem to stretch endlessly but some statistics put the effectiveness of these “solutions” in questionable light. For instance, the Federal Trade Commission published a study in 2002 reporting 55% of all weight loss claims as having “strained credibility”. Another research states that 95% of dieters gain their weight back.

So, is long-term weight loss maintenance really an impossible feat? Teresa Fuller, M.D. Ph.D says it does not have to be. In her book, Change 1 Thing: A Doctor’s 12 Step Guide to Permanent Weight Loss, Disease Prevention and a Lifetime of Incredible Health, she rallies the way to permanent weight loss and, ultimately, a healthier life.

Dr. Fuller shares that her innovative step-by-step approach was developed after several of her patients asked her how they can lose weight and improve their health. Her book is founded on studies suggesting that gradual adoption of specific habits is effective for maintaining weight loss. The twelve steps in the manual are examples of such habits. Since it takes 21 days to make a new habit, readers can devote one month to firmly establish one of the 12 steps before tackling the next. After a year, all 12 steps will have been completed and the several health benefits can be enjoyed. These include weight loss, lower risk of having common chronic diseases and improvement of energy, vitality and mental clarity.

Groundbreaking, unique and practicable, Change 1 Thing: A Doctor’s 12 Step Guide to Permanent Weight Loss, Disease Prevention and a Lifetime of Incredible Health is designed for health-conscious individuals and especially for people who want to break free from chronic health problems and frustrating weight loss techniques that only work for the short-term.
