Parker Global, Lockbox to Launch Joint Managed Futures Product

Parker Global, Lockbox to Launch Joint Managed Futures Product

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 30, 2012

Parker Global Strategies, LLC (PGS) and Lockbox Asset Management (Lockbox) have joined forces to create a new managed futures index and related products and funds for institutional and high net worth investors.

The venture draws on the unique skills of each team. PGS, the creator of the Parker FX Index, brings its deep knowledge of CTA and FX managers, its experience in constructing both actively managed portfolios and investable indices comprised of such managers, and its proprietary style mapping system, CTA Style Trax™. The principals of Lockbox, a New York and Greenwich, CT based investment management firm founded by Aaron Ford and Jonathan Ende, have built award-winning derivatives and alternative investment businesses at major investment banks and bring their 40+ years of structuring, institutional money management, proprietary trading, and alternative investment expertise.

The jointly developed product offerings seek to deliver outsized returns with lower risk by using a customized structured solution coupled with a PGS-Lockbox proprietary systematic, volatility controlled, diversified portfolio of “Best of Breed” CTA, FX and Macro investment managers. The resulting products are targeted to have low to zero correlation to other asset classes and positive performance during market crises. In contrast to most alternative investments, the products will also have very short-term liquidity and a highly preferable custody arrangement.

According to Jonathan Ende, Co-founder of Lockbox, “We are very enthusiastic about our joint venture with Parker Global Strategies. Lockbox Asset Management spent significant time investigating potential partners for this exciting new product, and PGS’s expertise in the FX and CTA space along with their extensive due diligence and research process carried out on each manager is the perfect, synergistic fit.”

Virginia Parker, Managing Member and Chief Investment Officer of Parker Global Strategies said of the products’ underlying new index, “This Index should prove to be one of the most comprehensive rules-based, factor-driven allocation processes available to investors today. The methodology considers trading styles, auto-correlation, mean reversion, risk, quality of a manager’s operations, and more. We are excited to work with Lockbox on this product and eager to share this development with our clients.”

Aaron Ford, Co-founder of Lockbox, added, “Notably missing from most investors’ portfolios is managed futures exposure, which has historically performed as an effective hedge during market turmoil. In our joint effort with PGS, we have developed an innovative, systematic, and easy-to-understand approach to generating outsized absolute returns from the managed futures space in a capital efficient, highly liquid, and risk-reduced manner.”

Based on data from Hedge Fund Research, Inc. (HFR) on alternative investments for 2011, we estimate the managed futures industry had over $ 300 Billion of assets under management at last year end. Since the financial crisis of 2008, managed futures and macro investments have significantly outperformed other strategies and have become one of the fastest growing subclass within the alternative investment spectrum.

NOTE

More information detailing both the joint venture and the PGS-Lockbox Managed Futures Index can be made available on request.

Four Titans of the U.S. Armed Forces Join Honorary Advisory Board for Boulder Crest Retreat

Four Titans of the U.S. Armed Forces Join Honorary Advisory Board for Boulder Crest Retreat

Bluemont, Virginia (PRWEB) April 11, 2012

Four highly decorated and respected titans of the U.S. Armed Forces have agreed to serve on an Honorary Advisory Board for Boulder Crest Retreat, a 37-acre privately funded Loudoun County facility with accommodations and recreational services designed to help wounded warriors and their families recover and heal. Former Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, General Henry Shelton, (Ret.) U.S. Army, General Peter Pace, (Ret.) U.S. Marine Corps. and U.S. Navy Admiral (Ret.) William J. Fallon will serve as the Honorary Advisory Board, designed to help lead this charity in support of wounded warriors.

Boulder Crest, a not-for-profit organization, was founded by Ken Falke, a retired U.S. Navy E.O.D. (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) expert and successful local entrepreneur who donated land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains for this purpose. The mission of Boulder Crest is to offer the wounded a restful and rural sanctuary and a break from the reminders, routines and restrictions of their treatments. A $ 10 million capital budget has been created to cover the construction of accommodations, meeting space and outdoor recreational facilities. Once the facility is completed, troops who are undergoing rehabilitation at area military hospitals will be invited to stay at no cost.

“I am deeply moved and honored by the commitment of these distinguished men to join our Honorary Advisory Board,” said Ken Falke. “Their presence on this Board will serve to inspire us to bring this project to fruition as soon as possible…as well as to encourage the many people and organizations that we greatly need to contribute to this mission to build a local retreat for our returning wounded troops. I am truly gratified by their participation and support.”

John Lehman served 25 years in the Naval Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed him Secretary of the Navy where he served until 1987. During his tenure, he built a 600 ship Navy, established a strategy of maritime supremacy, and reformed ship and aircraft procurement. Lehman is the author of numerous books, including Command of the Seas, Making War, and On Seas of Glory. He is chairman of J.F. Lehman & Company, a private equity investment firm. He also serves on the board of directors for several companies and foundations.

General Henry Shelton served more than 38 years in the United States Army in a variety of command and staff positions. In 1996, he was promoted to general and became Commander in Chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command. He became the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1997.

Among his many military awards, General Shelton has received four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Army Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and the Purple Heart. Congress bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal on him on 2002. He currently holds board seats in a number of Fortune 500 companies.

General Peter Pace served more than 40 years in the United States Marine Corps. During his distinguished career, he held command at virtually every level, beginning as a rifle platoon leader in Vietnam. He is the first Marine to ever serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008, the highest civilian honor a president can bestow. General Pace is currently serving on the Board of Directors of several corporate entities involved in management consulting, private equity, and IT security. He is Chairman of the Board for the Wall Street Warfighters Foundation; a long-standing member of the Board of Directors for the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, and serves as an advisor to Our Military Kids.

Admiral William J. Fallon retired from the U.S. Navy after a distinguished 40 year career of military and strategic leadership. He led U.S. and Allied forces in eight separate commands and played a leadership role in military and diplomatic matters at the highest levels of the U.S. government. As head of U.S. Central Command, Admiral Fallon directed all U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa, focusing on combat efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He led the U.S. Pacific Command for two years, directing political-military activities in the Asia-Pacific region. He is chairman of CounterTack Inc., a cyber-security company, a partner in Tilwell Petroleum, LLC, an advisor to several other businesses, a distinguished fellow at the Center for Naval Analyses and on the Boards of several non-Profit organizations.

The Campaign has worked to raise awareness for the reduction of cancer risks. Founded in 2004, Next Generation Choices Foundation partners with communities to create and dispense educational tools that focus on environmental health advocacy and lifestyle choices. Since its inception the organization has been focused on having prevention be part of the cancer conversation with a focus on decreasing the rising incidences of this terrible disease.

The public charity was formed in response to the escalating cases of cancer and the lack of education and knowledge about potential causes. Couzens has been recognized by Congress in addition to the Commonwealth of Virginia for his work in initiating and creating best practices to reduce pesticide drift in health effected communities such as schools.

Under Less Cancer, Bill Couzens was the founder of National Cancer Prevention Day February 4th. This past Cancer Prevention Day, Congressman Steve Israel, Co-Chairman of the House Cancer Caucus said “we recognize everyone who has been touched by this terrible disease, either directly or indirectly”. Having introduced the resolution, he went on to say, “I encourage all of us to think about prevention and how we can reduce risks in our environment and lead healthy lifestyles. I applaud the work that Less Cancer is doing in this regard.”

Liberty Tax Service Reviews Tax Changes for Filing a 2011 Return

Liberty Tax Service Reviews Tax Changes for Filing a 2011 Return

Virginia Beach,VA (PRWEB) January 09, 2012

With fresh New Year’s resolutions to save money on taxes still top of mind, there are many tax measures to review that may apply for 2011 and/or 2012 filing. Liberty Tax offers this review of some of the more significant tax measures to keep in mind now, and for future planning.

“Some of the tax measures in effect through the Tax Relief Act of 2010 continued through 2011. Be aware of tax deductions that have expired, such as the making Work Pay Credit,” said John Hewitt, CEO of Liberty Tax Service.

Expired in 2011

Current Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) Amounts: There were no last minute changes or surprises for the Alternative Minimum Tax Credit. Through 2011, taxpayers paying the AMT who are eligible for tax credits can still claim the credits to offset their AMT bill. These include credits for child and dependent care expenses, elderly or disabled, education, and mortgage interest. For 2011, the AMT exemption amounts are $ 48,450 for unmarried individuals and $ 74,450 for a married couple filing jointly.

State and local sales tax deduction: Through 2011, taxpayers who itemize their deductions and live in one of the states without a state income tax may deduct their state sales tax or their state income tax, whichever is more advantageous.

Tuition and fees deduction: Qualifying higher education expenses such as tuition and fees paid for yourself, a spouse, or a dependent are again deductible as an adjustment on Form 1040. The allowable amount is up to $ 4,000.

Educators’ $ 250 deduction for supplies: Through 2011, eligible educators who have spent their own money for qualified classroom supplies can deduct up to $ 250 as an adjustment on Form 1040, regardless of whether they are able to itemize deductions. Any amount exceeding $ 250 may be claimed as an itemized deduction.

Deductible Interest Includes Mortgage Insurance Premiums

Mortgage insurance premiums are deductible as interest through December 31, 2011.

Residential energy credit for 2011: Some home improvements made through December 31, 2011 to a primary existing home qualify for a deduction of up to $ 500. These include insulation, metal and asphalt roofs, non-solar water heaters, and windows and doors. The credit is reduced by any residential energy credit taken after 2005.

Small Business Tax Breaks

Section 179 Expenses

For 2011, small businesses can expense up to $ 500,000 of the first $ 2 million of business expenditures considered section 179 expenses.

New businesses can deduct up to $ 10,000 in start-up expenses on their first tax return in 2011.

Mileage Deductions for 2011 and 2012:

    Business mileage:
2011: 51 cents per mile, January 1-June 30, 2011 and 55.5 cents July 1-December 3,2011. Also 55.5 cents for 2012.

    Medical or moving mileage:
2011: 19 cents per mile January 1-June 30, 2001, 23.5 cents per mile July 1-December 31, 2011, and 23 cents per mile for 2012.

2012: (we can add)

    Charitable mileage: 14 cents per mile for 2011 and 2012.

An Increase on the Tax for Non-Qualified Distributions from HSA

The Patient Protection Act increases the additional tax on nonqualified distributions from health savings accounts (HSAs) from 10 percent to 20 percent and from Archer MSAs from 15 percent to 20 percent effective after tax year December 31, 2010.

Expiring in 2012

Write off Full Amount of Itemized Deductions Through 2012

Taxpayers who itemize their deductions can deduct the full amount of their itemized deductions regardless of their adjusted gross income through 2012. Taxpayers can also deduct the full amount for exemptions, with no income restrictions or phase-outs through 2012

American Opportunity Tax Credit Continues Through 2012

The American Opportunity Credit is available again in 2011 and 2012 for taxpayers claiming higher education costs including required course materials. The credit will allow the taxpayer to claim up to $ 2,500 of the cost of college tuition and related expenses.

Section 179 Expenses Decrease

For 2012, small businesses can expense up to $ 125,000 of the first $ 500,000 of business expenditures considered section 179 expenses

Break for Short Sales and Home Foreclosures

Homeowners experiencing “short sales” and foreclosures will get a break for “debt-forgiveness” tax consequences. Instead of treating cancellation of debt as taxable income on the foreclosure of a principle home, no taxes will be levied on discharges of indebtedness of up to $ 2 million dollars for married taxpayers filing jointly and of up to $ 1 million dollars for a married taxpayer filing a separate return through tax year 2012.

Capital Gains

The maximum individual capital gain tax rate of 15% remains in effect for 2011 and 2012.

WCPE?s Premieres ?My Life in Music?

WCPE’s Premieres “My Life in Music”

Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) December 21, 2011

WCPE Program Director Dick Storck announces the premiere of a new program called “My Life in Music”, co-hosted by a musician from the North Carolina Symphony. Each musician chooses his own musical recordings for the show, which airs the first Monday of each month, 7-8 pm, ET.

“This program presents a great opportunity to know our North Carolina musicians,” offers Storck. “It’s autobiographical, providing musical selections and interesting facts about each musician’s favorite composers and works.”

Thus far, co-hosts for My Life in Music include the following musicians:

Paul Randall, principal trumpeter, January 2, 2012;

Bonnie Thron, principal cello, February 6, 2012;

David Marschall, acting principal viola, March 5, 2012;

Karen Galvin: concert master, 1st violin, April 2, 2012;

Erik Dyke, double bass, May 7, 2012;

Maria Evola, 1st violin, June 4, 2012.

“We’re so pleased that WCPE is producing this program and making our fascinating and knowledgeable musicians its centerpiece,” says North Carolina Symphony CEO Sandi Macdonald.

“My Life in Music” is conversational and fun. It reveals the distinct personalities of the talented people you more often see in a formal setting on stage wearing tuxedos and playing their instruments.

“In speaking with the musicians, I have already learned so much in terms of critical listening,” adds Community and Arts Liaison Tara Lynn, who will produce this new show. “When they share recordings by the champions of their own instrument, the musicians have increased my own enjoyment of the music ten fold.”

“Each musician has approached this project differently so far,” continues Lynn. “Every one is spectacular! I truly believe WCPE listeners’ affinity will grow, as mine has, for each one of these individuals who work as a collective to light up the concert hall.”

Point Made: How to Write Like the Nation’s Top Advocates Reviews

Point Made: How to Write Like the Nation’s Top Advocates

With Point Made, legal writing expert Ross Guberman throws a life preserver to attorneys, who are under more pressure than ever to produce compelling prose. What is the strongest opening for a motion or brief? How to draft winning headings? How to tell a persuasive story when the record is dry and dense? The answers are “more science than art,” says Guberman, who has analyzed stellar arguments by distinguished attorneys to develop step-by-step instructions for achieving the results you want.
The author takes an empirical approach, drawing heavily on the writings of the nation’s 50 most influential lawyers, including Barack Obama, John Roberts, Elena Kagan, Ted Olson, and David Boies. Their strategies, demystified and broken down into specific, learnable techniques, become a detailed writing guide full of practical models. In FCC v. Fox, for example, Kathleen Sullivan conjures the potentially dangerous, unintended consequences of finding for the other side (the “Why Should I Care?” technique). Arguing against allowing the FCC to continue fining broadcasters that let the “F-word” slip out, she highlights the chilling effect these fines have on America’s radio and TV stations, “discouraging live programming altogether, with attendant loss to valuable and vibrant programming that has long been part of American culture.”
Each chapter of Point Made focuses on a typically tough challenge, providing a strategic roadmap and practical tips along with annotated examples of how prominent attorneys have resolved that challenge in varied trial and appellate briefs. Short examples and explanations with engaging titles–”Brass Tacks,” “Talk to Yourself,” “Russian Doll”–deliver weighty materials with a light tone, making the guidelines easy to remember and apply.
