Medical Device Attorney Michael Goetz Appointed to Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) April 20, 2012

Morgan and Morgan is pleased to announce that attorney Michael Goetz has been appointed to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee (PSC) for the transvaginal mesh multidistrict litigation (MDL) actions against Ethicon, C.R. Bard, American Medical Systems and Boston Scientific. Pursuant to a recent federal court order, a singular PSC has been created to coordinate across MDL lines in the four separate vaginal mesh MDL actions pending in in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia before the Honorable Judge Joseph Goodwin. Mr. Goetz is honored to have been named to the PSC, a small group of attorneys chosen to guide the entire plaintiff’s side of the litigation.

“Being an effective member of this PSC will require a great deal of time and commitment,” said Mr. Goetz. “After speaking with dozens of our clients suffering from the effects of these products, I knew I wanted a leadership role to obtain a fair remedy for the harm they sustained.”

The appointments to the PSC and other leadership roles in the ongoing vaginal mesh MDLs were announced on April 13 after Judge Goodwin approved a proposed counsel structure for the plaintiffs’ attorneys. By doing so, Judge Goodwin allowed for a coordinated and unified leadership spanning the four MDL actions comprised of the following: In re C.R. Bard, Inc. Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2187);In re American Medical Systems, Inc. Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2325); In re Boston Scientific Corp. Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation(MDL No. 2326); and In re Ethicon, Inc. Pelvic Repair Systems Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2327). The plaintiffs in the lawsuits are women who were implanted with one or more of the manufacturers’ vaginal mesh products in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and claim to have suffered serious physical and mental injuries as a result.

The FDA first brought to light reports of vaginal mesh complications in 2008 when it issued a public health notification on serious complications associated with transvaginal mesh placement. After issuing this statement, the agency reported that it saw the number of adverse events associated with vaginal mesh products continue to climb and issued an update in July 2011 informing the public that transvaginal mesh complications in the repair of POP are not rare. Surgical placement of the mesh through the vagina in the treatment of POP may expose patients to a greater risk than other surgical options without evidence of any greater clinical benefit, according to the FDA. Mesh erosion, severe pain, infection, urinary problems and recurrence of prolapse are among the side effects reportedly linked to the mesh products.

Mr. Goetz and his teams of medical device attorneys at Morgan and Morgan are currently handling and accepting new claims from women who suffered side effects following vaginal mesh surgery. For more information and a free case review, please visit ForThePeople.com today.

Four Titans of the U.S. Armed Forces Join Honorary Advisory Board for Boulder Crest Retreat

Bluemont, Virginia (PRWEB) April 11, 2012

Four highly decorated and respected titans of the U.S. Armed Forces have agreed to serve on an Honorary Advisory Board for Boulder Crest Retreat, a 37-acre privately funded Loudoun County facility with accommodations and recreational services designed to help wounded warriors and their families recover and heal. Former Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, General Henry Shelton, (Ret.) U.S. Army, General Peter Pace, (Ret.) U.S. Marine Corps. and U.S. Navy Admiral (Ret.) William J. Fallon will serve as the Honorary Advisory Board, designed to help lead this charity in support of wounded warriors.

Boulder Crest, a not-for-profit organization, was founded by Ken Falke, a retired U.S. Navy E.O.D. (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) expert and successful local entrepreneur who donated land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains for this purpose. The mission of Boulder Crest is to offer the wounded a restful and rural sanctuary and a break from the reminders, routines and restrictions of their treatments. A $ 10 million capital budget has been created to cover the construction of accommodations, meeting space and outdoor recreational facilities. Once the facility is completed, troops who are undergoing rehabilitation at area military hospitals will be invited to stay at no cost.

“I am deeply moved and honored by the commitment of these distinguished men to join our Honorary Advisory Board,” said Ken Falke. “Their presence on this Board will serve to inspire us to bring this project to fruition as soon as possible…as well as to encourage the many people and organizations that we greatly need to contribute to this mission to build a local retreat for our returning wounded troops. I am truly gratified by their participation and support.”

John Lehman served 25 years in the Naval Reserve, rising to the rank of Captain. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed him Secretary of the Navy where he served until 1987. During his tenure, he built a 600 ship Navy, established a strategy of maritime supremacy, and reformed ship and aircraft procurement. Lehman is the author of numerous books, including Command of the Seas, Making War, and On Seas of Glory. He is chairman of J.F. Lehman & Company, a private equity investment firm. He also serves on the board of directors for several companies and foundations.

General Henry Shelton served more than 38 years in the United States Army in a variety of command and staff positions. In 1996, he was promoted to general and became Commander in Chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command. He became the 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1997.

Among his many military awards, General Shelton has received four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Army Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, and the Purple Heart. Congress bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal on him on 2002. He currently holds board seats in a number of Fortune 500 companies.

General Peter Pace served more than 40 years in the United States Marine Corps. During his distinguished career, he held command at virtually every level, beginning as a rifle platoon leader in Vietnam. He is the first Marine to ever serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008, the highest civilian honor a president can bestow. General Pace is currently serving on the Board of Directors of several corporate entities involved in management consulting, private equity, and IT security. He is Chairman of the Board for the Wall Street Warfighters Foundation; a long-standing member of the Board of Directors for the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, and serves as an advisor to Our Military Kids.

Admiral William J. Fallon retired from the U.S. Navy after a distinguished 40 year career of military and strategic leadership. He led U.S. and Allied forces in eight separate commands and played a leadership role in military and diplomatic matters at the highest levels of the U.S. government. As head of U.S. Central Command, Admiral Fallon directed all U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa, focusing on combat efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He led the U.S. Pacific Command for two years, directing political-military activities in the Asia-Pacific region. He is chairman of CounterTack Inc., a cyber-security company, a partner in Tilwell Petroleum, LLC, an advisor to several other businesses, a distinguished fellow at the Center for Naval Analyses and on the Boards of several non-Profit organizations.

Bob Chaput of Clearwater Compliance to Speak at Sixth Annual Conference of the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association (TLPCA)

Bob Chaput of Clearwater Compliance to Speak at Sixth Annual Conference of the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association (TLPCA)

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) April 12, 2012

Clearwater Compliance is pleased to announce its CEO and Founder, Bob Chaput, has been invited to speak at the Sixth Annual Conference of the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association (TLPCA) in Nashville.

“Waves of Change is the theme of the conference and certainly the passage of the HITECH Act in 2009 has created a significant ‘wave of change,’” according to Mr. Chaput, “because it significantly strengthened many aspects of the HIPAA Security and Privacy Rules and expanded the scope of organizations that must comply. HITECH brought us enforcement for the first time, including setting out penalties that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) could impose for violations of the HIPAA rules. Clearwater Compliance has helped many health care covered entities and business associates strengthen their compliance programs through education programs, software and services. We are pleased to have the opportunity to share information and insights at events such as this one.”

The conference is being held in Nashville, TN on April 27, 2012. Kim Speakman, TLPCA Board Member and Director of Compliance for Nashville-based Mental Health Cooperative (MHC) has first-hand experience with the complex task of assessing of their organization’s compliance program in relation to the more stringent requirements of the regulations. “We’re pleased to have Mr. Chaput participate in our annual conference. Building and maintaining a strong compliance program is not simply a short-term project, for which you can ‘check the box’ and be done. It requires a culture change throughout the organization. Our work with Clearwater Compliance helped us create our culture of compliance and complete critical baseline assessments, so we could prioritize and develop a plan to strengthen our program. We thought every TLPCA member could benefit from Bob’s knowledge and practical experience and are excited that he agreed to further educate our members on this very important matter.”

Bob is one of the most recognized regulatory experts within the HIPAA-HITECH sector. He has been responsible for the security and compliance of some of the world’s largest healthcare databases, and has founded and grown several businesses to help organizations comply with strict regulations around the security, privacy, integrity, and availability of data. Bob regularly speaks and writes on HIPAA and HITECH compliance issues, and eagerly embraced the internet as a way to educate and help a larger audience.

Bill Couzens, who originally hails from Detroit, Michigan is a graduate of Wayne State University and the Founder and President of the nonprofit Next Generation Choices Foundation and the widely known Less Cancer Campaign.

The Campaign has worked to raise awareness for the reduction of cancer risks. Founded in 2004, Next Generation Choices Foundation partners with communities to create and dispense educational tools that focus on environmental health advocacy and lifestyle choices. Since its inception the organization has been focused on having prevention be part of the cancer conversation with a focus on decreasing the rising incidences of this terrible disease.

The public charity was formed in response to the escalating cases of cancer and the lack of education and knowledge about potential causes. Couzens has been recognized by Congress in addition to the Commonwealth of Virginia for his work in initiating and creating best practices to reduce pesticide drift in health effected communities such as schools.

Under Less Cancer, Bill Couzens was the founder of National Cancer Prevention Day February 4th. This past Cancer Prevention Day, Congressman Steve Israel, Co-Chairman of the House Cancer Caucus said “we recognize everyone who has been touched by this terrible disease, either directly or indirectly”. Having introduced the resolution, he went on to say, “I encourage all of us to think about prevention and how we can reduce risks in our environment and lead healthy lifestyles. I applaud the work that Less Cancer is doing in this regard.”

Couzens has been published in a number of periodicals and has been a speaker on the topic of reducing harmful environmental exposures linked to cancer. Couzens regularly speaks on human health and environment issues.

Next Generation Choices Foundation Board is Chaired By Thomas M. Sherman, MD, and Board Members include Bill Couzens, Greg Lam, Ronald B. Herberman MD, Veronique Pittman, Maryann Donovan PhD, MPH, Science Reporter Miles O’Brien, John Couzens, Stormy Stokes Hood.

The 38 members of this year’s Junior Class chose to benefit the Less Cancer campaign of the Next Generation Choices Foundation because virtually all members of the Foxcroft community and their families have been directly affected by this disease in one of its many forms. The Less Cancer campaign educates and provides information centered on evidence- based science for reducing health and environmental risks associated with cancer.

Less Cancer has followers on Twitter and Facebook in over twenty-five countries.

Virginia Tops the 2012 MoneyRates.com List of Best States to Make a Living; Hawaii Deemed Worst State for Second Year

Virginia Tops the 2012 MoneyRates.com List of Best States to Make a Living; Hawaii Deemed Worst State for Second Year

Foster City, Calif. (PRWEB) March 19, 2012

Virginia tops the list in MoneyRates.com’s 2012 Best States to Make a Living, displacing 2011 winner Illinois, which falls to fourth place. Hawaii earns Worst State to Make a Living for the second year in a row.

The study, which calculated rankings through an adjusted average income figure for each state, reveals sharp differences between the best and worst states. Virginia’s adjusted average income was $ 43,677, while Hawaii’s was just $ 22,394 – more than $ 7,000 less than the next-to-worst state, Maine.

“The differences between the top and bottom states are pretty extreme,” says Richard Barrington, senior financial analyst for MoneyRates.com. “It’s important for people to be aware of these differences. Someone who is struggling to find a job or make a living wage in one state might find things significantly easier in another state.”

The ranking of some states changed significantly from MoneyRates.com’s 2011 rankings. Nevada rose most dramatically, moving up 22 places to become the 18th best state to make a living. Three states appear in the top 10 list for the first time: Michigan, Wyoming and Utah.

With the exception of South Dakota, which dropped 14 places to the 10th worst state to make a living, all of the 10 worst states from the 2012 rankings were among the 10 worst states to make a living in 2011.

“The purpose of this exercise isn’t to criticize states where conditions are tough,” explains Barrington. “The inspiration behind the analysis is to help people. No. 1, if you are having a tough time, you can get a feel for whether things might be better somewhere else. No. 2, if you do decide to make a move, you can choose a place where the odds may be on your side.”

A recent CareerBuilder survey found that 44 percent of workers said they would be willing to relocate for a job opportunity, indicating that a significant number of workers might consider crossing state lines to better their career and income prospects.

The 10 Best States to Make a Living in 2012, according to MoneyRates.com’s adjusted average income calculation, is:

1. Virginia – $ 43,677

2. Washington – $ 43,662

3. Texas – $ 42,816

4. Illinois – $ 41,865

5. Colorado – $ 40,490

6. Michigan – $ 40,490

7. Wyoming – $ 39,745

8. Utah – $ 39,250

9. Delaware – $ 38,802

10. Massachusetts – $ 38,793

The 10 Worst States to Make a Living in 2012, according to MoneyRates.com’s adjusted average income calculation, is:

1. Hawaii – $ 22,394

2. Maine – $ 29,703

3. Vermont – $ 30,433

4. Mississippi – $ 31,178

5. Montana – $ 31,256

6. Rhode Island – $ 31,353

7. California – $ 31,459

8. West Virginia – $ 32,297

9. South Carolina – $ 32,645

10. South Dakota – $ 33,121

For more details, please see MoneyRates.com’s 2012 Best States to Make a Living and Worst States to Make a Living, as well as the full ranking of all 50 states.

Methodology

MoneyRates.com used four factors in its analysis: unemployment rates and average annual wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, state income tax rates from the Tax Foundation and cost of living data from the ACCRA Cost of Living Index.

Starting with each state’s mean annual wages, the figures were adjusted in accordance with tax rates, unemployment rates and cost of living figures. The resulting number is the adjusted average income figure used in the rankings.

Calling Attention to Mental Health as a ‘Neglected Issue’

I’m Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Development Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Sunday, October tenth, was World Mental Health Day. This year’s observance centered on the relationship between mental health and chronic physical conditions like diabetes and cancer. The World Health Organization says more than four hundred fifty million people suffer from poor mental health. The most common disorders are depression and schizophrenia. Mental health experts also include other disorders like drug and alcohol abuse that affect millions of people. Elena Berger is with the World Federation for Mental Health. That organization, based in the United States, held the first World Mental Health Day in nineteen ninety-two. Mrs. Berger says mental health problems are most severe in poor countries that lack the resources to deal with them. She says in developing countries, a huge number of people, up to eighty-five percent, cannot get any form of mental health treatment. Experts say about half of all mental health problems first appear before the age of fifteen. The countries with the highest percentages of young people are in the developing world. That means they are also the countries with the poorest levels of mental health resources.
