Developmental disabilities are the most numerous of disabilities, and they are exceptionally complex. This professional reference overviews developmental disabilities, discusses the information needs of people with developmental disabilities, and provides practical guidance to librarians and information professionals who serve them. Particular attention is given to the ramifications of the Americans with Disabilities Act for librarians. The first part of the book defines and describes developmental disabilities from perspectives relevant to librarians and information professionals. The second part examines key life issues that have a major impact on people with developmental disabilities. This section emphasizes the current trend toward the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in mainstream society. References to related information sources are included throughout. The third part looks at disabilities from the perspective of the library or other information agency. An appendix lists organizations, agencies, businesses, and libraries that provide additional materials.

Groundbreaking New Spanish-language Initiative from the National Center for Learning Disabilities
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 01, 2011
Today one in five school children is Hispanic, and it is estimated that Hispanics will account for 95% of the teen population growth in the U.S. in the next decade. Many of these children are at special risk for lower academic achievement, grade repetition, and school dropout. Hispanic families need access to information about learning disabilities (LD) and other resources to help their children receive the services and supports they need to succeed in school and beyond.
A first-of-its-kind Spanish-language initiative for children facing learning disabilities is being launched to increase early detection and intervention of learning disabilities, which can be pivotal to educational success. Until now Spanish-speaking families have had scarce resources to help them understand the signs of learning disabilities, nor have they had the resources available to help resolve learning issues or to find the answers to questions about how to access resources that will translate into school success.
“Early detection of barriers to learning can be life-changing for young students, and every Spanish-speaking parent and caregiver should know about these free resources,” said James H. Wendorf, executive director of the National Center for Learning Disabilities. “Now Hispanic families can access online tools and information in English and Spanish that will help them to be effective advocates for their children.”
The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) is pleased to launch an extensive toolkit and informational campaign in Spanish to help families detect the signs of LD, work with their children to develop and enhance skills, and be an advocate for their children at school. This comprehensive toolkit is the first-of-its-kind for Hispanic families, with over three-dozen Spanish-language resources available including an interactive guide to help parents detect learning disabilities and recommendations for helping young children overcome barriers to early reading. The Spanish language online kit can be found by clicking here.
The informational campaign also includes briefings with educational and community leaders nationwide, as well as an online advertising campaign that aligns with the growing use of search engines and social media among Spanish speakers. Additional Spanish-language resources will be publicly launched in the coming months, to create what will be the largest online learning disabilities resource nationwide.
Early identification of struggle is critical to ensuring educational success for children facing learning disabilities, and this initiative has the promise to profoundly help Hispanic families.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities’ (NCLD) mission is to ensure success for all individuals with learning disabilities in school, at work and in life. At NCLD, we connect parents and others with resources, guidance and support so they can advocate effectively for their children; we deliver evidence-based tools, resources and professional development to educators to improve student outcomes; and we develop policies and engage advocates to strengthen educational rights and opportunities. Have you heard of Albert Einstein or Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell? Of course yes, you know them! They are the great inventors whose inventions are still talked about, and their inventions have paved the way for several new innovations. But did you know what was common to all three of them? They all suffered from learning disability sometime in their lives.
The spread of awareness on issues like learning disability in India is very recent. There is still inadequacy in the rehabilitation services and special education programmes. Even if there are facilities, the lack of awareness prevents them from getting utilized. A better awareness of learning disorder and at the same time a better awareness of culturally acceptable means for treating the affected children can only decrease the burden on affected children, their families and society in India as a whole.
Learning Disability is a state of arrested or incomplete development of mind which includes significant impairment of intellectual and social functioning. Arrested or incomplete development of mind might be considered to mean whatever caused the disability occurred in childhood or before.
LD can create a crisis between children and parents, and often the quality of the attachment is affected in a negative way. Parents are special in their own way but parents of special children with disabilities are uniquely special. Always remember that parents are role models for their children, and children are quick to enact the behaviour of their parents. To develop a positive outlook in your child, it is first important to be optimistic yourself. A simple change in your attitude will transform the parenting of your child with a learning disability from challenging to easygoing.
It is important to diagnose learning disability to decide the appropriate line of care. An early diagnosis will help in treating the manageable physical and psychiatric conditions. In some conditions genetic counselling is also required. Besides psychiatrists, even paediatrician, general practitioners and other hospital specialists may also help in diagnosing learning disability.
“The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995,” which came into force in the year 1996, is a significant step in the direction of ensuring equal opportunities for people with disabilities and their full participation in the nation building. This law is a landmark and grants provisions like education, employment and vocational training, job reservation, research and manpower development, creation of barrier-free environment, rehabilitation of persons with disability, unemployment allowance for the disabled, special insurance scheme for the disabled employees and establishment of homes for persons with severe disability etc.
Your positive attitude and your efforts along with proper moral support can successfully help you or your child to overcome this disability. Always remember that even an ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ says ‘I-M-POSSIBLE.’ So, this year on the Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, get yourself abreast of the information on learning disability and measures to overcome it.
Ensuring individuals with disabilities are prepared in the event of an emergency or terrorist event
(PRWEB) September 15, 2004
The recently established Maryland Department of Disabilities (formerly the GovernorÂs Office for Individuals with Disabilities) is sponsoring four statewide conferences on Emergency Preparedness and Response for Individuals with Disabilities, to be held throughout Maryland during October and November, 2004. These regional conferences will provide training and technical assistance on appropriate emergency preparedness and planning for individuals with disabilities in MarylandÂs communities. There has been a heightened awareness of the need for inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the emergency planning process since September 11th as it was apparent that little preparation had been focused on the special needs of individuals with a wide variety of disabilities.
Activities will be focused in all four regions of the state, Western Maryland, the Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and the central (Baltimore-Washington) region. ÂWe are pleased that with all the homeland security activities currently being conducted in the state, individuals with disabilities are being considered and are participating in activities that impact on us all. Said Secretary Cox.
Individuals being invited to participate include individuals with disabilities, their families and advocates, organizations that provide services to individuals with disabilities, advocacy organizations, government agencies, business leaders and a wide range of emergency planning and response personnel. The conference activities will provide an opportunity to identify specific needs of individuals who have sensory, cognitive, mobility and behavioral/ mental health challenges, and offer an opportunity to share with the responder communities the expertise that individuals with disabilities possess related to their needs during an emergency.
The conference dates are October 19 (Eastern Shore), October 21 (Western Maryland), November 12 (Southern Maryland) and November 22(Central Maryland). Interested individuals can register online at MDdisabilitypreparedness.org, by mail to Maryland Department of Disabilities, 217 E. Redwood Street Suite 1301, Baltimore, MD 21202 or by phone at 410.767.3665 (voice) or 410.767.3660 (TTY).
Participating in these conferences are the GovernorÂs Office for Homeland Security, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, the GovernorÂs Office on Service and Volunteerism and the Disability Preparedness Center.
